With outdoor adventure comes encounters with animals of all sorts. Some wanted and some not (watch out for the black bears – Western North Carolina has some of the largest). For animal experiences you can’t get anywhere else, try one of our three. Each is a favorite family pastime and something kids can’t wait to come back for each season.
If you’re looking for adventure, these furry creatures love to lead groups on hikes around the property. Afterwards, catch the exciting and family-friendly llama Olympics and capture a photo or two with one of your favorites on the lawn. During special times, High Hampton llamas can even be used as caddies for a round of golf.
Our newest animal event is falconry. High Hampton provides the opportunity for guests to learn about the art and sport of falconry with lessons in the history of falcons and hawks, falconry equipment and the special training and handling involved in caring for the birds.
High Hampton Resort’s most iconic animal encounter is that with our resident donkeys as pictures on the walls of the Inn show guests taking donkey rides all the way back to the late 1940s. Fred and Ed are our two current donkeys. They love visitors to come by and say hello and have been known to love a good apple or carrot snack, but be sure to check for signs about donkey dietary restrictions. For even more animal fun, swing by in summer or stop by one of the resort’s signature seasonal events to see Fred and Ed taking younger guests on hayrides on the Lawn, just as their predecessors have for generations.
